INEC begins process for restoration of suppressed constituencies in Delta, 3 other states

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the process for the restoration and delineation of suppressed constituencies in Delta, Jigawa, Kogi and Benue States.

In a memo INEC/HQ/EOPS/DEL/S.32/213, dated April 30, 2026 and signed by Secretary of the Commission, Dr Rose Oriaran-Anthony asked that the process for restoration should begin.

Excerpts of the memo, sent to the Resident Electoral Commissioners of the affected states reads as follows: “The Commission, at its meeting held on 30 April 2026, approved the commencement of technical processes towards the restoration of the 20 court-ordered suppressed State Constituencies in Kogi (11), Delta (4), Benue (5) and Jigawa (1).

“The technical processes involve stakeholders’ engagement at the state head office and fieldwork at the affected constituencies. The exercise is aimed at obtaining relevant geographical and demographic data necessary for the production and validation of constituency maps and other technical documents.

“Consequently, you are kindly requested to:
I. Liaise with relevant stakeholders in the State, including traditional institutions, community leaders, security agencies and other critical stakeholders, to facilitate smooth conduct of the exercise;
il. Provide necessary administrative and logistical support to the field teams during the exercise,” the memo stated

INEC also directed the RECs to ensure adequate security arrangements for all personnel and equipment deployed for the exercise.
