2027: I will serve only one term as Nigeria’s President – Makinde

Oyo State Governor and presidential candidate of the Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM), Seyi Makinde, has promised to spend only four years in office if elected president in the 2027 general elections.

Makinde made the pledge on Saturday during an APM town hall meeting in Yola, Adamawa State, where he outlined his plans to address Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.

The governor said his administration would focus on rebuilding public confidence in government through an inclusive leadership arrangement that would bring together Nigerians from different backgrounds.

He explained that the proposed government would operate for a single term, during which it would work towards improving electricity supply, reducing poverty, tackling insecurity and addressing other problems affecting the country.

“Our government will not last beyond four years. And it will be an all-inclusive government,” he said.

Makinde’s declaration follows a similar commitment by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), who has also promised to serve for only one term if elected in 2027.

The proposals come amid political discussions over the rotation of presidential power between northern and southern Nigeria.

Addressing supporters at the gathering, Makinde said Nigerians deserved a government that would acknowledge the country’s problems and pursue practical solutions rather than make promises it could not fulfil.

He maintained that his administration would respect citizens’ rights, encourage public participation in governance and remain open to ideas from different sections of society.

“My promise to you, the north-east and the people of Nigeria is this: we will be sincere in finding solutions to the challenges that we are faced with,” he said.

“We will not play politics. We will not undermine your rights. We will ensure that we tell you the exact truth. We will listen to you. Solutions can come from anywhere.”

The APM candidate also criticised President Bola Tinubu’s administration over its handling of the economy and electricity sector.

Makinde recalled Tinubu’s earlier commitment to improving electricity supply, arguing that the government had failed to meet the expectations it created before assuming office.

He said Nigerians should consider the administration’s performance when deciding whom to support in the next presidential election.

“The current administration came in and told us that it had the magic wand to solve the challenges confronting us. So, we are all aware that they have failed to provide electricity and other things they promised. So, I believe we all know how to cast our ballots,” Makinde said.

And Tinubu Blinked

The governor urged voters to use the 2027 election to demand greater accountability from political leaders.

According to him, the election presents an opportunity for Nigerians to reject what he described as the “politics of lies and deceit” and support a new approach to governance.

“It is a time when we will all come together to establish a reset agenda and tell Nigerians the whole truth,” he said.

Beyond electricity, Makinde questioned the effectiveness of several economic initiatives introduced by the Tinubu administration.

He identified the government’s compressed natural gas programme, electric vehicle policy and naira-for-crude arrangement among the initiatives he considered unsuccessful.

The presidential candidate also demanded greater transparency in the pricing of petroleum products.

He called on the Federal Government to publish the formula used in determining fuel prices, arguing that Nigerians had a right to understand the factors influencing what they pay for petroleum products.

Makinde maintained that making such information available would help citizens assess government decisions affecting their daily expenses.

Meanwhile, Bauchi State Governor and APM national leader, Bala Mohammed, expressed confidence in the party’s ability to provide an alternative to the current administration.

Mohammed described the APM as “the number one opposition party in the country”, saying its members possessed the political experience needed to address Nigeria’s development challenges.

He said the party would promote a system of government built on inclusion, respect for different communities and equal access to opportunities.

The Bauchi governor added that the APM remained committed to bringing Nigerians together and creating conditions that would allow citizens across the country to contribute to national development.
