Angry Governor Nwifuru sacks commissioner

Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has removed the Commissioner for Works, Stanley Lebechi Mbam, from his position with immediate effect.

The decision was announced on Saturday in a Public Service Announcement signed by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Monday Uzor.

Following his removal, Mbam was directed to surrender government property in his possession to the Secretary to the State Government. This includes the official vehicle assigned to him while serving as commissioner.

He was also instructed to hand over the affairs of the Ministry of Works to its Permanent Secretary, who will oversee the ministry pending further directives from the state government.

Confirming the decision, the statement said, “The Governor of Ebonyi State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, FNIOB, FCAI, GGCEHF has directed the immediate removal from office of the Honourable Commissioner for Works, Engr. Stanley Lebechi Mbam.”

No specific reason was provided for Mbam’s removal.

The government, however, reiterated its commitment to “delivering effective governance and improving public infrastructure.”

Mbam’s exit comes months after he faced disciplinary action from the Nwifuru administration.

In February 2026, the governor suspended him alongside the Commissioner for Infrastructure Development for Concession, Ogbonnaya Obasi-Abara, over allegations of dereliction of duty.

While the February action temporarily kept Mbam away from office, the latest directive formally removes him from the state cabinet.
