Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has opened up about his decision to return to the classroom at 77.
According to the 89-year-old, he wanted to prove that education should not have an age limit when he decided to further his studies at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN).
The former president enrolled for postgraduate studies in Christian Theology in 2014, having previously obtained a postgraduate diploma in the same field from the institution in 2009.
He explained that his motivation went beyond earning another academic qualification.
He said he wanted to learn more about God and strengthen his relationship with Him.
He said, “I went back to school at 77 years old to study Christian Theology, to show by example that there’s no age limit to education.”
He added, “I also wanted to learn more about God so I could worship Him better, and I enjoyed it.”
He described learning as something that never ends and said going back to university gave him a new challenge.
But his academic journey did not stop with the master’s degree. In January 2016, at 79 years old, Obasanjo earned a master’s degree in Christian Theology from NOUN.
