Oba of Benin marks 10th coronation anniversary with durbar

The Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, on Saturday hosted a durbar and luncheon at Garrick Memorial School grounds in Benin, as part of activities marking his 10th coronation anniversary.

The event featured horse riding and cultural displays, celebrating the history and traditions of the Benin Kingdom, with traditional rulers and other dignitaries attending the occasion.

Expressing gratitude for the honour, Ewuare II said the participation of northern traditional rulers signified sportsmanship and peaceful coexistence between the Benin people and other ethnic groups.

The traditional ruler assured residents and visitors from different ethnic and religious backgrounds that Edo remained peaceful and accommodating, provided they conducted their activities lawfully.

“Edo is a peaceful and accommodating place for all law-abiding citizens. We will continue to be the peaceful people we are known for,” he said.

The Emir of Kagara in Niger State, Alhaji Amen Attahiru, speaking on behalf of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, congratulated the Oba on the anniversary.

Abubakar III described the Oba as a symbol of courageous leadership and unity, saying the celebration offered an opportunity to strengthen relationships among traditional institutions across Nigeria.

He thanked the palace for the warm reception accorded the northern delegation, particularly the horsemen and their accompanying children, who received medical attention during the event.

“You are a symbol of leadership, courage and unity in this country,” he said.

The durbar and luncheon are part of the series of events lined up to commemorate the 10th coronation anniversary of the royal father and it’s expected to end on Nov. 21.
