Why Tinubu extended Adeniyi’s tenure at the Customs

In order to consolidate ongoing reforms and complete critical initiatives of the administration in the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) as well as conclude other initiatives designed to turn the Service into a true trade facilitator, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the extension of the tenure of Mr. Adewale Bashir Adeniyi as Comptroller General by one year.

His tenure was due to expire on August 31, 2025.

According to a press release issued on Thursday by Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, other ongoing projects by Adeniyi include:
• implementation of the National Single Window Project; and
• execution of Nigeria’s obligations under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) protocol.
“President Tinubu recognises Mr. Adeniyi’s steadfast leadership and commitment to service.

“The President is confident that this extension will further strengthen the Nigeria Customs Service in achieving its strategic mandate of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security” Onanuga’s statement read.

On June 28, 2025, Adeniyi was elected as the Chairperson of the World Customs Organisation, the highest decision-making body in global customs administration. It is the first time a Nigerian will lead the global body and came two years after he was appointed Comptroller General of the Customs.
