South-East: High stakes, heavyweights, and seats on the line for 2027 By Chukwumerije Aja, Enugu

Sunday Southerner – Political Insight

Following the official release of the definitive candidate rosters by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the political landscape across Nigeria’s five South-East states has crystallized into a high-stakes arena of heavyweights, re-alignments, and fierce grassroots competition. Spanning Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo states, the published lists bring an end to months of legal tussles and party primary disputes, setting the stage for an intense electoral showdown.

Abia State: Battle for executive and legislative dominance

In Abia State, the race for the governorship features a compelling tripartite contest between Eric Opah of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Okey Ahiwe of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Alex Otti of the Labour Party (LP).

This gubernatorial friction cascades down to a fiercely contested 24-seat State House of Assembly.

Key focal points on the legislative front include Umuahia Central, where Stanley Dickson Nwabuisi (PDP) faces Paul Anthony O. Alaribe (APC) and Izuchukwu Davidson Nduka (APGA). Meanwhile, battles lines are firmly drawn in Umuahia North (Ohuhu) between Smart Ihuoma Iheoma (LP) and Kelechi Onuzuruike (PDP), alongside high-profile urban match-ups in Aba North and Aba South involving candidates from the LP, PDP, and APGA.

Anambra State: Soludo’s test and legislative gridlock

Anambra State presents a complex dynamic anchored by incumbent Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo carrying the banner of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), challenged by Andy Uba of the APC and prominent contenders such as Valentine Ozigbo.

Across Anambra’s 30 State House of Assembly constituencies, the electoral register highlights robust multi-party participation. In Awka South I, Emmanuel Chibuzor Okeke (APC) squares off against Vincent Chijioke Obi (PDP) and Henry Mbachu (LP). Similar legislative proxy wars define Nnewi North, Aguata I & II, and Idemili North, where APGA, APC, and PDP heavyweights vie for legislative supremacy.

Ebonyi State: Consolidation and grassroots battles

Ebonyi State’s gubernatorial race positions incumbent-backed Francis Nwifuru of the APC against Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii of the PDP and Bernard Odoh running under alternative platforms.

Across the state’s 24 legislative zones, constituencies such as Abakaliki North, Izzi West, Afikpo North West, and Ezza South showcase aggressive contests between the ruling APC and opposition PDP structures.

Notably, attention has also focused on the Ivo State Constituency within the Ebonyi South senatorial district, where APC consensus candidate Chisom Godswill Anyim leads a packed field of contenders following a rancor-free primary season.

Enugu State: Coal City power struggle

In Enugu State, the battle for the Lion Building features Peter Ndubuisi Mbah (PDP) defending his mandate against Geoffrey Uchechukwu Nnaji (APC) and Chijioke Edeoga (LP).

The legislative map across Enugu’s 24 constituencies reflects this tripartite division. In Enugu South Urban, Bright Ngene (LP) locks horns with Chukwuka Eneh (PDP), while Enugu North features a fierce clash between Ibenaku Onoh (PDP) and Kingsley Udeh (APC). Rural and semi-urban constituencies such as Nsukka East, Nsukka West, Udi North, Oji River, and Igbo-Etiti East further underline a deeply polarized electorate.

Imo State: Securing the Eastern Heartland

Imo State rounds out the regional scorecard with Governor Hope Uzodinma in a Titanic battle with the immediate past governor, Rochas Okorocha and Senator Ifeanyi Araraume for the Okigwe Senatorial District.

Uzodinma, driven by ambition to become President of the Nigerian Senate has fought stridently to shut out Okorocha and Araraume, preferring to install a stooge who will be a placeholder while perfecting the plot to get the covered position.

As chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum, the Imo helmsman believes he is well placed to succeed the incumbent, Senator Godswill Akpabio who is not relenting in his bid to retain the office in the 11th Senate.

Within Imo’s 27 State House of Assembly constituencies, high-intensity urban and rural campaigns are set for Owerri Municipal, featuring Johnleoba Iheoha (APC), Chukwuemeka John Sunny-Unachukwu (PDP), and Obinna Joseph Obi-Njoku (APGA).

Similar legislative showdowns are locked in Mbaitoli, Ideato North, Nkwere, Orlu, and Aboh Mbaise.

A Definitive Turning Point

With the publication of these candidate registries, the legal phase of pre-election positioning gives way to open campaigns. INEC has urged stakeholders and voters to cross-examine individual candidate credentials and full constituency rosters directly via state portals or public notice boards stationed across state headquarters in Umuahia, Awka, Abakaliki, Enugu, and Owerri, as the South-East gears up for a historic democratic choice.
